If you're an experienced accountant with a knack for accuracy, Robert Half has a terrific opportunity for you to check out at an organization in the Local Government industry. The responsibilities of the Staff Accountant include preparing journal entries, monthly and year-end closings, bank reconciliation, fixed asset maintenance, and general ledger reconciliation. Many aspects of internal reporting during the monthly close will be your reponsibility. Your duties will also include participating in compliance, reviewing schedules for the reporting processes, and staying connected with our external auditors throughout quarterly reviews and annual audits. This role also involves the production of Financial Statements, Cash Flow projections, and Budgets. This Largo, Maryland based firm has a long-term contract / temporary to hire position available, and offers an innovative work environment where effort is rewarded.

Major responsibilities

- Support implementation, maintenance and adherence to internal controls and accounting procedures ensuring compliance with GAAP

- Offer descriptions of a large number of financial data and communicate insights in a useful and understandable manner

- Take part in various department-wide initiatives

- Assist in the month end, quarter end and year end closing process including monthly financial close workbook preparation

- Carry out fixed asset ledger, depreciation, and reconciliation

- Conduct month end close, journal entries, without supervision

- Prepare complex journal entries and account reconciliations including but not limited to cash, prepaid expenses and payroll

- Be responsible for analysis of income statements and balance sheets and communicate findings to management

- Maintain capital lease and monthly payment schedules

- Ad-hoc reporting and special projects, as requested

Requirements

- Strong attention to detail

- 2+ years of recent and relevant accounting experience

- Skilled with ERP systems

- Seizes opportunities to produce results without direct supervision

- Ability to work within spreadsheets and databases

- Bank reconciliations experience

- Comprehensive knowledge of journal entries

- Excel Formulas experience preferred

- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel

- Proven knowledge of Abila MIP

- Month end closings experience highly desired

- Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills

- Spreadsheet and database capabilities

- Ability to prioritize work and balance multiple projects and deadlines

- BA/BS or equivalent in Accounting, Finance or Economics

- Ability to work well in matrix organization and dealing with ambiguity

- Critical thinking skills and the ability to retain complex work directions
